Rennsteig Cycle Trail

Untouched nature and locations steeped in history are the special characteristics of this 195 km long route from Hörschel near Eisenach through the Thuringian Forest nature preserve and the Thuringian Highland as far as Blankenstein.

Landmarks such as the Wartburg near Eisenach, Ruhla with its miniature park, the Great Inselsberg Mountain near Brotterode or the Ebertswiese mountain lake near Floh-Seligenthal are all revealed to cyclists. The trail then goes on to the sports facilities of Oberhof, the most famous winter sport resort in Thuringia, and the Rennsteig Garden. Travelling via Masserberg, a major health resort (bathhouse) with a therapeutic climate, you will reach the glass-blowing town of Neuhaus with its famous wooden church. From here, it is worth taking a detour to Lauscha, the birthplace of Christmas tree decorations or into the climbing garden just past Steinach. You’ll pass through the slate – known as the “blue gold” of the region – around Lehesten, before this scenic tour ends on the Saale river in Blankenstein.

The Rennsteig Cycle Trail is directly connected to the Werra Valley Cycle Trail. The tour is suitable for the more ambitious sports cyclists and mountain bikers.
