Laura Cycle Trail

The Laura Cycle Trail links the Ilm Valley Cycle Trail in Weimar with the Unstrut Cycle Trail near Sömmerda over a distance of 46 km through Weimar and the Weimar and Sömmerda region. A large part of the route runs along the former embankment of the Laura narrow gauge railway. Here cyclists will see an old agricultural area with all its history and rural traditions.

Even the venerable old village church, the Waidstein, which inspired Lyonel Feininger’s cycling tours and sketches, can still be found.
Along the route, you should not fail to visit the open-air “Dampf-Loko-Mobile” (Steam Engine Mobiles) exhibition in Leutenthal, the Thuringian Dumpling Museum in Heichelheim, the “Culinary Voyages in Time” in Heichelheim and the “tirica” adventure world, a zoological venue with a nature trail and petting enclosure in Vippachedelhausen. And a detour to the nearby Liebstedt Fortress, the former transit fortress of the German Order of Knights, should be planned too. One cultural highlight is the Heichelheim Potato Festival around the Heichelheim windmill on the first Saturday in September.

Cosy family-run guest houses in the region invite cyclists to explore the Thuringian core region and the Saale countryside with the cities of Weimar, Erfurt and Jena on the cycle trails described previously and the long-distance cycling trails in the direct vicinity (Thuringia Town Chain, the Gera Cycle Trail and the Saale Cycle Trail).
