Feininger Cycle Trail

The trail begins at the Bauhaus University, the former Bauhaus building complex in Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse in Weimar. Feininger taught here from 1919 until 1925. The artist’s first studio was in the direct vicinity at Bauhausstrasse 7 a. The next stop is house number 16 in Gutenbergstrasse, where Feininger lived with his family from 1919 until 1926. The trail continues westward until the end of Shakespeare Strasse, past the gardens and into the valley of the Kirschbach. Now it runs through open countryside from village to village and arrives after about 25 kilometres at the stone bridge in Oberweimar. From here, you can easily reach the centre of Weimar through the Goethe Park.

Most of the tour is along little-used roads and country tracks, of which the condition differs and which may not be very suitable for cycling in bad weather. The church in Gelmeroda houses an exhibition on Lyonel Feininger’s work and is open daily from 8 am to 8 pm.
