Explore the Thuringia Town Chain Cycle Trail!
The Thuringia Town Chain Cycle Trail connects seven of the most beautiful Thuringian towns and also leads through some very scenic areas of Thuringia, which are shaped by their rich history. This cycle trail is particularly suitable for culture-lovers and touring cyclists. As part of the D4 route, it is connected to the Germany-wide network of cycle routes and connects the Wartburg city of Eisenach in the West of the Free State of Thuringia to Altenburg, the town of playing cards, in the East.
Spanning approximately 230 km across Thuringia, there are plenty of historical town centres, well-known landmarks and cultural highlights as stopping points.
All of the towns along the cycle trail – Eisenach, Gotha, Erfurt, Weimar, Jena, Gera, Altenburg – are connected to the Deutsche Bahn rail network, so you can also comfortably ride smaller sections of the cycle trail.
The Thuringia Town Chain Cycle Trail is connected to a variety of other cycle routes, offering cycling tourists the chance to discover even more charming regions of Thuringia.
In 2009 and 2010, the project for the “Construction of a tourist information system for cyclists along the German D4 route in Thuringia and the Thuringia Town Chain Cycle Trail”, funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development and the Thuringian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Employment and Technology, created consistent signage for cycle tourists.
