Travelling within Thuringia

by train

Bicycles can be taken free of charge on local trains in Thuringia. However, there is no guarantee that you will always be able to get your bike on a particular train as that will depend on the available space. Many trains have multi-purpose compartments in which bicycles can be easily stored, and these can be identified from the outside by the bicycle symbol. Storage capacity can be limited at weekends and on routes to and from popular cycle routes. Groups with three or more bicycles are therefore advised to notify the train company in advance of the date and time of their journey.

Eisenach, Gotha, Erfurt, Weimar, Jena, Gera and Altenburg are connected to the Deutsche Bahn rail network by InterCity (IC), RegionalExpress (RE) and regional train (RB) services.

The following towns and communities along the Towns of Thuringia Cycle Route have a railway station from where you can continue your journey by train (listed from west to east):

Wartburgregion: Wutha - Schönau - Sättelstädt
Gothaer Land: Mechterstädt - Fröttstedt - Wandersleben - Neudietendorf

taking your bicycle on buses and trams

Bicycles can usually be carried on buses and trams, provided that the vehicle is equipped to carry bicycles and there is sufficient room. Some companies do not allow bicycles on board at certain times, such as during rush hour or at the start and end of the school day. Information on fares, conditions of carriage and taking your bicycle is published by the individual companies.
